Reds eye redemption after tasting league phase defeat in Istanbul

Liverpool return to Istanbul on Tuesday as they get their Champions League knockout campaign underway against Galatasaray.

OneFootball Videos

It is a familiar opposition for the Reds, who visited the Turkish champions in the league phase and were beaten 1-0 after an early spot-kick from Victor Osimhen.

That defeat came on matchday two, and the Reds went on to recover to a positive league phase finish, securing automatic progression to the round of 16 after trouncing Qarabag in their final outing.

Their form has been mixed in recent weeks, though. They knocked Wolves out of the FA Cup last time out, but were also beaten by the Premier League’s bottom club four days prior.

Galatasaray, meanwhile, will hope to repeat the trick as they face Liverpool for the second time this season. They reached this stage of the Champions League by way of a play-off, where they beat Juventus 7-5 over two thrilling legs.

They will be riding high ahead of this match, too, after beating bitter rivals Besiktas last time out.

Galatasaray vs Liverpool team news

Arne Slot was dealing with a selection crisis of sorts when he last stepped foot in Rams Park, but the situation is rather lighter this time around.

There is some concern surrounding Alexis Mac Allister, who was withdrawn with an injury after being clattered by Hwang Hee-chan last time out, but his issue does not appear serious. It remains to be seen if he will be involved against Galatasaray, though.

Elsewhere on the injury list, there are no surprises. Alexander Isak, Wataru Endo, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni are all sidelined.

Hugo Ekitike was rested for the FA Cup defeat of Wolves and should come back into the side on Tuesday. So too were Ibrahima Konate and Jeremie Frimpong, who will both hope to be reinstated to the starting lineup.

Rio Ngumoha impressed at Molineux, too, and should be in line for another appearance off the bench - if not a start. Florian Wirtz is also available, having come off the bench to face Wolves.

Galatasaray boss Okan Buruk is lucky to have nearly the full complement available to him. The only player on the treatment tabel at present is 19-year-old reserve goalkeeper Enes Buyuk, who is yet to appear this campaign.

Leroy Sane will be available despite being shown the red card for the first time in his senior career in a Super Lig defeat of Besiktas last time out. The resultant suspension does not apply in the Champions League.

Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen, who has scored seven Champions League goals this season, is expected to start up top.

Galatasaray vs Liverpool prediction

Liverpool’s previous meeting with Galatasaray came amid a run of six defeats in seven, and Slot will be keen to prove that run was simply an extended blip.

This rare chance at Champions League redemption is a tantalising one, and the Dutchman has the opportunity to show the continent just how much his side have improved, in spite of such limiting injuries.

Now on a run of seven wins in nine, his much-improved Reds should be confident of securing victory which they can easily convert to progression in the second-leg at Anfield.

Liverpool to win, 2-1.

Head to head (h2h) history and results

Before this season, these two sides had not faced one another since they shared a Champions League group in 2006. The home side won each fixture, both times by a 3-2 scoreline.
