After two wins from two, new signings Iliman Ndiaye and Enzo Fernández started at the Etihad Stadium, but it was the visitors who should have taken the lead early on as Taiwo Awoniyi raced through on goal but struck his effort wide of the left post.

Rayan Cherki then came close to the opener, but saw his shot cannon off the post after some mesmeric footwork.

Shortly before the half-hour mark, we made the all-important breakthrough as Fernández released Antoine Semenyo down the right flank.

The winger crossed accurately for the onrushing Haaland to head us ahead, claiming his 20th headed goal in the top-flight, the most of any player in the division since his arrival in the summer of 2022.

Our towering forward could have doubled his tally before the interval after Cherki’s clever flick saw him clean through on goal, but Coventry shot-stopper Carl Rushworth stood tall to block the effort.

After the break, the visitors showed more attacking intent and almost levelled with 20 minutes left to play, but Gianluigi Donnarumma got down well to palm away substitute Loum Tchaouna’s low effort.

10 minutes later, our Italian goalkeeper was called into action again, superbly denying Ellis Simms from close-range.

We remained resolute and organised to see out the victory and make it three wins from three league fixtures under Enzo Maresca.
