Gattuso faces selection call as Doekhi 'to be available' after hand injury | OneFootball

Danilho Doekhi’s rapid recovery from a hand injury has left Gennaro Gattuso weighing up his centre-back options for Lazio.

Il Corriere dello Sport reports that the Dutch centre-back will be available on Saturday when Lazio visit Venezia, their final match before the international break.

The 28-year-old joined on a free in July and started alongside Oliver Provstgaard in the first four competitive games, the Coppa Italia loss to Mantova and Serie A wins over Bologna, Genoa and Udinese.

He suffered the injury before the AC Milan clash and required surgery. In his absence, Josip Sutalo made his full Lazio debut, then made way for full debutant Diogo Leite for the closing stages of the 2-2 draw.

Gattuso must choose between Doekhi and Sutalo on the right. While Sutalo carries the bigger profile after Ajax and Croatia’s recent World Cup, Doekhi impressed in his early outings, bar the Mantova tie.

On the left side, the call is between Provstgaard and Leite. Provstgaard has offered little reason to be dropped, though Gattuso could be tempted to reunite Leite with Doekhi after four seasons together at Union Berlin.

It is a marked shift from the last two seasons, when Mario Gila and Alessio Romagnoli were undisputed starters and others largely served as back-ups.
