Lazio will be without Nicolo Rovella for a period, pushing Gennaro Gattuso to reassess his midfield and explore regista alternatives.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports the Italian international has a calf strain and could be out for two weeks. Il Messaggero claims it is more serious, suggesting a 40-day layoff and absences against Udinese, AC Milan and Venezia before the long international break.

Rovella, 24, is viewed as Lazio’s most creative presence in midfield after a season marred by two long-term injuries. Frustration deepened when he picked up a knock against Genoa on Sunday.

Options are thin. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru is sidelined and Danilo Cataldi needs extra time to recover from groin surgery after a setback. Reda Belahyane, who replaced Rovella against Genoa, should start as the deep-lying playmaker between Kenneth Taylor and Davide Frattesi in the coming weeks.

Gattuso might also test 19-year-old Adrian Przbyborek as a regista in the coming days. The Pole joined in January and has one senior appearance, on the final day of last season against Pisa.

Another option is Bruno Galassi, 19, signed from Real Madrid this summer, who might prove a more natural fit for the role.
