Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann has backed Nick Woltemade despite the forward’s struggles at Newcastle.

Woltemade joined Newcastle from Stuttgart in a £69m club-record deal last summer and enjoyed a bright start at St James’ Park, but has struggled for form in recent weeks.

The German forward has been used in an unfamiliar midfield role of late and has failed to score in his last 11 league appearances.

Woltemade has established himself as Germany’s leading forward in the build-up to the 2026 World Cup and Nagelsmann has emphasised his trust in the 24-year-old.

He backed Woltemade, who has scored four goals in eight caps for the national team, to rediscover his form and insisted the forward needs time to adapt to English football.

Nagelsmann underlines ‘trust’ in Woltemade

Speaking to Kicker, Nagelsmann said: “He’s a young player who needs time to develop, as you can see now in Newcastle.

“So I don’t expect him to score 15 goals in Newcastle and then shoot us to a World Cup title. He’s welcome to do that, but it would be extraordinary. I told him only last week to stay relaxed. We have trust in him.“
