The DFB announced that Jürgen Klopp is its preferred candidate to succeed Julian Nagelsmann.
Officials plan to open talks with the 59-year-old, who has signalled a general willingness to accept the position.
Klopp is regarded as one of Germany's most successful and influential coaches, having enjoyed trophy-laden spells with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool before stepping away from club management.
Germany now hopes to persuade him to take charge as the national side begins a new chapter after a disappointing World Cup campaign under Nagelsmann.
Formal negotiations are yet to begin, but his openness to the role could raise optimism among supporters that one of the country's most respected coaches could soon lead the team.
