Gerónimo Rulli, the hero of Villarreal’s 2021 Europa League final, joins Manchester City.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the 34-year-old moves from Olympique Marseille and signs a two-year deal running to 2028.
The switch returns to the Etihad a goalkeeper who was on City’s books in 2016-17 without a first-team appearance. He comes back with international experience and a World Cup with Argentina.
Rulli’s status at Villarreal was forged on 26 May 2021 in Gdansk. Manchester United were beaten after a 1-1 draw, the Europa League final settled by penalties.
Every outfield player scored in the shootout, then Rulli converted his kick before saving David de Gea’s effort for 11-10. Signed in 2020, he was also the starter as Villarreal reached the 2021/22 Champions League semi-finals. His City move restores him to the international shop window and adds experience to a top-level squad.
