Leeds United added vast amounts of experience to the midfield department with the signing of Sean Longstaff.
The 27-year-old has penned a four-year deal with the club after making the switch from Newcastle United, committing his future at Elland Road until 2029.
Below are eight facts about our fifth summer signing…
Longstaff joins up with former teammate Karl Darlow as he makes the move to West Yorkshire. The duo have featured in 29 matches together, most recently beating Tranmere Rovers in the 2022/23 League Cup.
Longstaff made five appearances in the UEFA Champions League when Newcastle reached the Group Stages of the competition in the 2023/24 season. Playing the full 90 minutes in the heart of the midfield in a draw with AC Milan at the San Siro, Sean then scored in a stunning 4-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain at St. James’ Park and also featured against Borussia Dortmund.
A 70-year trophy drought was ended on Tyneside last term after Eddie Howe’s side lifted the EFL Cup. The midfielder featured in five matches enroute to the final, before Newcastle defeated Liverpool at Wembley.
The 2018/19 season proved to be a breakout year for Longstaff, making his debut for the Magpies in a League Cup tie at Nottingham Forest. A first Premier League appearance came on Boxing Day, before he opened his goalscoring account in a 2-0 victory over Burnley on home soil.
Sean enjoyed two loan spells earlier in his career, firstly helping guide Kilmarnock to an eighth-place finish in the Scottish Premiership in the 2016/17 season, before scoring nine goals and registering six assists for Blackpool the following campaign.
A familiar opponent, the 27-year-old has faced Leeds on four occasions throughout his career, winning once, drawing twice and losing once.
Sean is the older brother of midfielder Matty Longstaff, with whom he shared the pitch 14 times with for their childhood club, beginning with a famous victory over Manchester United that saw Matty score the winner. The younger of the two now plies his trade in the MLS with Toronto FC.
Continuing the family theme, the brothers’ father David was also an accomplished sportsman, representing the Great Britain Ice Hockey team over 100 times, before being inducted into the British Ice Hockey Hall of Fame.
