Getafe are in talks to sign Pierre Ekwah on loan from Saint-Étienne, according to journalist Sacha Tavolieri.

Discussions are said to involve Ekwah’s camp over a possible loan. The La Liga club are convinced by the 24-year-old and want to pair him with Orel Mangala as they shape their squad before the new season.

Ekwah joined Sunderland from West Ham United in January 2023 and quickly became a regular in midfield. He made 61 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals, before moving to Saint-Étienne.

He initially moved to the Ligue 1 club on loan, then signed permanently once clauses in that agreement were activated.

His spell on Wearside was mixed, though he delivered notable performances and built support among sections of the fanbase. He is also remembered for a costly error against Newcastle United in the FA Cup.

Ekwah’s physical profile, ball-carrying and willingness to receive under pressure made him important to Sunderland’s midfield. A switch to Getafe would offer the chance to continue in another of Europe’s major leagues, with the Spanish side keen to reach an agreement for the coming campaign.
