Girona have confirmed the loan signing of Ter Stegen from Barcelona until the end of the season, and a clause will prevent him facing Barça in mid-February.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, Barcelona will cover almost all of his reported 16 million euro salary, with Girona paying around half a million.

The 33-year-old said goodbye to the Barça dressing room in the morning as the squad flew to Prague without him, then passed a medical at Barcelona’s Clínica Creu Blanca before the move was made official.

After more than 10 years guarding Barcelona’s goal, he will commute up the AP-7 to Montilivi and Vilablareix as he aims to make Germany’s World Cup squad this summer, if he convinces Julian Nagelsmann.

From Prague, Alejandro Balde confirmed his departure. Hansi Flick later acknowledged the switch, called it the right decision, praised Ter Stegen, and hoped he can become Germany’s number one, adding they have their fingers crossed for the World Cup.

Girona are also adding Argentine forward Claudio Echeverri, due to be presented on Wednesday, and midfielder Fran Beltrán from Celta. The German is set to take Paolo Gazzaniga’s place after an error-strewn season, and could debut at Montilivi against Getafe on Monday.
