The upcoming test for FC Barcelona in La Liga arrives in the form of a clash with Girona away from home. La Blaugrana, despite their best efforts so far, are currently in second place in the league with a game in hand.
With this Catalan clash being their game in hand, Hansi Flick’s side will need to win it no matter what. Their goal is to return to the top of the La Liga table, and a win here is the only way that they can manage to do it.
Heading into this fixture, there will be a lot of pressure on the Catalan giants to bounce back after their humiliating defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey. In fact, their hopes of mounting a comeback in the second leg against Diego Simeone’s side might just depend on how they respond in the upcoming game against Girona.
After all, momentum is a crucial aspect of football, and Hansi Flick’s side will look to ensure that they are the ones who get to have it. However, this will not be a walk in the park, and Girona would love to make things difficult for La Blaugrana.
In terms of form at least, Barça is the side that has been enjoying a good run in La Liga. After all, across their last five games in all competitions, the Catalan giants have four wins and one loss. Interestingly, their only loss came in the Copa del Rey.
As for their goal difference, they have scored 12 goals in their last five games, but they have also conceded 7 goals in return. Not a great difference, especially considering the fact that they conceded four goals in their previous outing against Atletico Madrid without a goal to respond.
Girona, on the other hand, are not exactly enjoying great form right now. With two draws, one loss, and two wins in their last five games, they are not flying high in the league. Currently in 15th place in La Liga, they really need some points for themselves here.
In terms of their goal difference, they have scored five goals in their last five games while having conceded just three goals. By keeping those numbers in mind, it seems clear enough that while they do not tend to score a lot of goals, they are also doing well to restrict the number of goals they concede.
However, matches between these two sides always tend to deliver exciting contests. So far this season, the first encounter in La Liga ended up with Barcelona winning 2-1, and this will now be their second match of the league season.
