Leeds United’s international break had been smooth, with form and fitness holding up, until Jean-Matteo Bahoya picked up an ankle problem on France U21 duty. The rest of Daniel Farke’s travelling group have largely emerged unscathed.
Leeds’ summer signings had set the tone. James Trafford shipped three against Spain, though Wayne Rooney defended the goalkeeper and questioned Thomas Tuchel. Nico Elvedi and Tarik Muharemovic both scored in key Nations League fixtures.
Bahoya was called up despite limited club minutes, started a 1-1 draw with Iceland, then scored as France beat Estonia. He was withdrawn early in the third of four games, a 3-2 win over Luxembourg. According to L’Equipe, coach Gérald Baticle said it is an ankle issue and further tests are planned, so facing Switzerland on Tuesday looks unlikely.
It is a setback for the winger just as he was nudging into Farke’s thoughts. There is hope the knock proves to be only impact related.
The positive news is that Elvedi, Muharemovic, Jaka Bijol, Gabriel Gudmundsson, Trafford, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and others have stayed fit. Ilia Gruev has logged significant minutes too, starting all three of Bulgaria’s matches and completing 90 minutes twice after months out with a knee problem and only one 21s outing beforehand.
Bahoya may need a rest when Leeds face Arsenal next weekend, yet Farke should be able to call on his other internationals and the added defensive reliability of Gruev.
