Days after FC Barcelona withdrew from the European Super League project, Real Madrid have now officially announced that they have reached a peace agreement with UEFA and EFC (formerly ECA) for the best interests of European football.
This development effectively brings an end to the dispute between the aforementioned parties surrounding the Super League project.
“UEFA, the European Football Clubs (EFC) and Real Madrid CF reach an agreement for the good of European club football,” Real Madrid’s statement read.
The statement clarified that the agreement comes after months of discussions between all the stakeholders, “respecting the principle of sporting merit and emphasising long-term sustainability of clubs and improving the fan experience through use of technology.”
“This agreement in principle will also serve to resolve their legal disputes related to the European Super League, once a final agreement is implemented,” the statement confirmed.
It should, essentially, bring an end to the renegade Super League project that was launched back in 2021, with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez being at the centre of it.
Real Madrid and A22, the company promoting the Super League, had sued UEFA for €4 billion in damages, but the aforementioned statement suggests that the legal disputes will be resolved once there is a complete agreement.
