Jon Gorrotxategi is three games from completing a breakout first season with Real Sociedad, established in midfield. It already includes a place on the 55-man provisional World Cup list.
According to AS, the Eibar-born 23-year-old returned from a loan at Mirandés to cover the role vacated by Martin Zubimendi, who joined Arsenal in the summer. Despite an early injury, he earned the trust of Sergio Francisco and later Pellegrino Matarazzo. He joined the club at 15.
He has played 36 competitive matches, 29 in La Liga and seven in the Copa del Rey, totalling 2,579 minutes. The club extended his contract in October until 2030, three years beyond his previous 2027 deal.
He lifted the cup on 18 April. He has dovetailed with Beñat Turrientes and Carlos Soler, scored a stoppage-time derby winner against Athletic in the first league meeting, and supplied three assists.
That list also features other Real Sociedad players including Remiro, Sergio Gómez, Jon Martín, Carlos Soler, Ander Barrenetxea and Mikel Oyarzabal. It underscores a season of growth that leaves him established in the elite and in the national-team plans.
The final 26 for the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada will be announced on 25 May. Barcelona lead the 55-strong prelist with nine players, followed by Real Sociedad with seven.
