Sheffield United produced a commanding display to see off the challenge of high-flying Ipswich Town, claiming a deserved 3-1 victory at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon.
Ipswich began brightly and asked early questions of the United defence. George Hirst went close after Clarke was released down the left, only for Michael Cooper to make a smart save. The Blades’ number one was soon in action again, producing another fine stop to beat away a driven effort from Sammie Szmodics. That double intervention proved pivotal.
From the resulting corner, United made the breakthrough. Ben Mee hacked the initial danger clear, but Clarke’s inadvertent touch redirected the ball into the path of Gustavo Hamer. The midfielder needed no second invitation, threading an expertly weighted pass through to Callum O’Hare, who kept his composure to slot home and open the scoring.
United carried momentum into the closing stages of the first half and doubled their advantage in stoppage time. Ipswich goalkeeper Walton initially parried efforts from both Patrick Bamford and Femi Seriki, but Andre Brooks reacted quickest to the loose ball, firing home to give the Blades a commanding 2-0 lead at the interval.
After the restart, Cooper remained busy as Ipswich searched for a route back into the contest, producing a sharp save to deny Clarke’s volley. Their opportunity finally arrived on the hour mark when a McGuinness handball was spotted by the referee. Clarke stepped up and confidently converted the resulting penalty to halve the deficit.
Any hopes of a comeback were swiftly extinguished. Once again, Hamer was the architect, delivering a sumptuous first-time pass that split the Ipswich defence and allowed Bamford to finish with composure, restoring United’s two-goal cushion.
Frustration soon crept into Ipswich’s play and the game boiled over late on.
Bamford, already booked, was shown a second yellow card for alleged simulation as he rounded the goalkeeper, reducing United to ten men for the closing stages. Despite the setback, the Blades saw the game out comfortably to secure a fully deserved three points.

Chris Wilder was visibly delighted with the performance, praising both the tactical approach and the resilience shown by his side during a difficult week.
“I thought we were outstanding from the off,” Wilder said to SUTV. “It’s been a tough week, a really tough week. There’s always noise around the place and it’s never a controlled opinion of where we’re at, but the board and Steve Bettis have been brilliant in supporting what we’re trying to do.
“They’ve been building for a few years, Ipswich. They were good in the Premier League last season, unlucky to drop out, and they’re on a roll. The perception might have been a comfortable away win for them, but tactically we got it absolutely spot on.”
Wilder also highlighted individual performances, adding: “We’re trying to set the standard. Sydie Peck was outstanding and has been a huge miss. Tom Davies hasn’t played much football and Blaster’s been out for 13 months, but he’s put his hand up and shown his quality.”
The Blades boss was less impressed with some of the officiating, particularly around flashpoints before half-time and Bamford’s dismissal.
“There’s a divide between football people and referees, 100%,” Wilder said. “Callum O’Hare’s got a cut on his head; he didn’t do that to himself. And with Pat’s sending off, just manage the game, feel the game. If that’s a booking, why isn’t there consistency elsewhere? That’s the distance between referees and managers.”
