An even first half brought half-chances at both ends, Daniel James saw a goalbound effort blocked by Lewis Dunk after a cleared corner and Karl Darlow denied a swerving Pascal Gross strike.

Brighton quickened after the break but the hosts stood firm, with Diego Gomez and Jack Hinshelwood snatching at efforts. On 74 minutes Anton Stach was stretchered off after an awkward fall with Carlos Baleba, and substitute Joel Piroe soon went close. Five minutes into second-half added time, Calvert-Lewin latched onto Jan Paul van Hecke’s poor back-pass, rounded Bart Verbruggen and finished.

Player ratings, Leeds: Karl Darlow eight for a spectacular first-half stop and assured handling. Joe Rodon eight, steady and willing to break forward. Jaka Bijol nine, dominant in the air, composed and responsible for two big blocks. Sebastiaan Bornauw eight, largely solid with a couple of progressive passes. Daniel James seven, bright and troublesome going both ways. Ethan Ampadu eight, captain dependable with a goal-saving clearance.
