Lutsharel Geertruida is leaving Sunderland after last season’s loan, with Granit Xhaka, Brian Brobbey and Chris Rigg among those to respond.
The former Feyenoord defender arrived in the final days of a hectic summer window and made 30 appearances as Regis Le Bris’ side finished seventh in the Premier League and qualified for the Europa League for the first time in the club’s history. The Netherlands international said in a social media post that he is heading back to RB Leipzig and wished Sunderland the very best for the future.
There had been talk of a permanent move this summer, and Sunderland had confirmed discussions with RB Leipzig in last month’s retained list update. The decision means he returns to his parent club.
Geertruida said he was grateful for the chance to represent the club, proud to make his Premier League debut there and to play a part in a historic season. He thanked his team-mates, staff and everyone connected with Sunderland, adding that he enjoyed every moment on and off the pitch, and sent his best wishes for the future.
Captain Xhaka led the tributes, calling him his brother and saying they would always love him. Nordi Mukiele offered his love and Romaine Mundle labelled the versatile defender the best. Brobbey and Rigg responded with emojis expressing sadness at his farewell.
