Lutsharel Geertruida has confirmed in a social media post he will not return to Sunderland after last season’s loan, prompting messages from Granit Xhaka, Brian Brobbey and Chris Rigg.
He arrived from Feyenoord on a season-long deal late in a hectic summer window and made 30 appearances in all competitions. Regis Le Bris’ side finished seventh in the Premier League and qualified for the Europa League for the first time in the club’s history.
There had been talk of a permanent move, with Sunderland outlining discussions with RB Leipzig in last month’s retained list, but the 26-year-old is now heading back to his parent club.
His message expressed gratitude for the chance to represent the club, pride at making his Premier League debut and being part of a historic season. He thanked team-mates and staff, said he enjoyed every moment and wished Sunderland the very best for the future.
Captain Granit Xhaka replied, “My brother, we will always love you”. Nordi Mukiele posted “big loveeeee” and Romaine Mundle called the versatile defender “the best”. Brian Brobbey and Chris Rigg responded with emojis reflecting the emotion of his farewell.
