Lutsharel Geertruida has confirmed in a social media post that he will not be back at Sunderland after last season’s loan, prompting messages from Granit Xhaka, Brian Brobbey and Chris Rigg. The Netherlands defender said in a post that he wished the club the very best for the future.
Geertruida arrived from RB Leipzig on a season-long loan in the final days of a hectic summer window. He made 30 appearances in all competitions as Regis Le Bris’ side finished seventh in the Premier League and sealed Europa League qualification for the first time in the club’s history.
There had been talk of a permanent move this summer, but the 26-year-old has now confirmed his departure and will return to RB Leipzig.
In his message he expressed gratitude for the chance to represent Sunderland and pride at making his Premier League debut at what he described as a special club. He said he enjoyed a historic season, thanked team-mates, staff and everyone connected with the club, and wished them well.
Captain Granit Xhaka replied with an affectionate note, calling him his brother and saying he would always be loved. Nordi Mukiele sent his love and Romaine Mundle labelled the versatile defender the best, while Brian Brobbey and Chris Rigg responded with sad-face emojis.
