Grêmio have terminated the contract of centre-back Rodrigo Ely, the club announced on Friday afternoon. According to Globo.com, his deal had been due to run until December 2027.

On social media, Grêmio thanked the 32-year-old for his service and wished him success. He joined in August 2023, made 57 appearances and scored one goal.

Ely is expected to agree a move to Almería in Spain. It was the last club he represented before signing for Grêmio in 2023, and they had already tried to re-sign him in 2025 before he suffered an injury.

Born in Lajeado, Rio Grande do Sul, the defender came through Grêmio’s academy. He moved to Milan at a young age and spent his professional career in Europe.

While at Milan, he had loans at Reggina, Varese and Avellino. After the 2015/2016 season he joined Alavés, where he spent five years, then played for Almería before returning to Brazil with Grêmio.

Ely’s departure takes the number of early-season exits from Grêmio to 17. The list includes players not in Luís Castro’s plans as well as those loaned out, sold or released.
