Grêmio have appointed Portuguese analyst Hugo Ribeiro as head scout, replacing Fernando Lázaro. The club said in a statement that he will lead the market analysis department.
Ribeiro is due to start on eight January. Lázaro, formerly Corinthians coach and an analyst for the national team, left the post amid a change of leadership.
The hire aligns with Luís Castro’s backroom staff, with the head coach stressing during talks the need for a like-minded specialist. The club only advanced the search after reaching agreement with the coach.
Ribeiro becomes the seventh Portuguese currently at the club. Alongside Luís Castro, the staff includes assistants Vítor Severino and Pedro Mané, goalkeeping coach Daniel Correia, performance analyst Nuno Baptista and fitness coach Nuno Cerdeira. The only Brazilian is fitness coach Roberto Júnior (Betinho), formerly of Flamengo and Botafogo.
Ribeiro built his career at Benfica. He was involved from inception in the Benfica Campus Academy, the Benfica International programme and Benfica Football Intelligence, which monitors the football human resources market. He also served as the president’s personal adviser, sporting coordinator and head of international business.
