Grêmio sacked Portuguese coach Luís Castro on Sunday afternoon, prompting a surge of online reaction focused on a possible return for Renato Portaluppi.
After Saturday’s comeback defeat to Vasco in a direct relegation fight, supporters at the Arena booed Castro and chanted Renato’s name. According to Globo.com, the club have already made first contact with Renato and are also considering other candidates.
Similar chants were heard in July, when Grêmio were eliminated from the Sudamericana.
On social media, many fans cast Renato as the only coach who could keep the team in the Brasileirão.
If an agreement is reached, it would be his fifth spell in charge, the most recent running from 2022 to 2024. Castro was later seen leaving the training centre and bidding farewell, saying it had been a pleasure to eliminate their big rivals.
