Grêmio have completed six months without a front-of-shirt sponsor, the run dating to 8 December when Energia Bet appeared for two one-off matches. The club has also not received payment under the agreement with its former partner, which was terminated last year.

Based on their previous deal with Alfa Bet, worth R$ 50 million per year, roughly R$ 4.16 million a month, the shortfall is estimated at a minimum of R$ 24.9 million.

Chief executive Alex Leitão is leading the search and has held talks with at least five companies, two in betting and three from other sectors. No agreement has been reached. There is an expectation talks could move forward after the World Cup period.

"It is not a comfortable position. I did not want to be talking today without the sponsorship. There is a lot of supply in the market. One industry dominates this market. Grêmio have been seeking new revenue. We have signed nine new sponsorship deals, four on the kit. That totals around R$ 150 million over the length of the contracts. We have had good conversations. We are not standing still."

He was speaking to Rádio Gaúcha in New York, where he attended meetings with the CBF about forming a single league.
