Grêmio reported back for pre-season on Friday afternoon at CT Luiz Carvalho. The squad, now under coach Luís Castro, features changes from the group that ended last year, with nine days to the Gauchão opener against Avenida at 21:00 on 10 in Santa Cruz do Sul.

According to Globo.com, 34 players took part. Absent were Jemerson, who is not in the plans, Lucas Esteves, who is expected to be moved on, and the injured Villasanti.

The Paraguayan midfielder has been authorised to return next Monday. He ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and injured the meniscus in August last year.

Caio Paulista, the only signing announced so far, trained with the group. Six prospects from last year’s under-17 and under-20 sides also joined, goalkeeper Gabriel Menegon, centre-back Luis Eduardo, midfielder Tiaguinho, midfielder Jefinho, attacking midfielder Gabriel Mec and forward Roger.

Players underwent medical tests on day one, then met Castro and his staff in the middle of the pitch. The session included initial work with the ball.

Not involved were Cristian Olivera, loaned to Bahia, and Camilo, transferred to Chapecoense. Right-back João Lucas, on loan to Remo, was also absent.
