Grêmio’s mid-season rebuild is paying off, with Wallace, Diego Caito and Filip Krovinovic stepping into the starting line-up and lifting results.

According to Globo.com, the trio were central to reaching the Copa do Brasil semi-finals against Inter and to the preceding league win over Chapecoense, easing pressure on Luís Castro.

All three have already scored for Grêmio, Caito on debut against Fluminense, Wallace versus São Paulo and Krovinovic with the third in the 3-1 Gre-Nal. The trio cost R$ 8 million, split R$ 5 million for Caito and R$ 3 million for Wallace, while Krovinovic arrived after leaving Hajduk Split.

Wallace arrived from CRB during the World Cup pause. Right-footed, he filled the left centre-back role after Viery went to Fiorentina and has eight straight starts, citing gratitude and a wish to keep improving.

Caito came from Goiás at the end of July and ended the stopgap of forward Pavon at right-back, reaching eight appearances. He missed Chapecoense with a shoulder injury, then asked to face Inter despite pain and will be re-assessed, with surgery possible.

Krovinovic assumed playmaker duties. He debuted in a 3-0 loss to Atlético-MG with the side near the Z-4, then featured in defeat by Bragantino amid fan protests and a meeting at the Arena. Little more than a week later he impressed before 55,695.

Grêmio also signed centre-forward Matheus Nascimento, winger Jovane Cabral, currently out with muscle pain, and midfielder Danilo Barbosa, a reserve to Noriega. They face Vitória on Monday.
