FC Groningen are planning on stepping up their transfer activity earlier as the Eredivisie relegated team is working on Motherwell sensation Kevin van Veen and Watford’s Leandro Bacuna, according to Voetbal International.

Van Veen (pictured during his time at Scunthorpe United) has had the best season of his career for the Scottish Premiership club 29 goals in all competitions.

Van Veen has cemented himself in Motherwell’s history after picking up a post-war record by scoring in 11 consecutive league matches for the Steelmen and has certainly picked up valid interest in his homeland.

Despite their relegation to the Eerste Divisie, Groningen are thought to be putting forward a strong case for the 32-year-old striker but still has a year left on his contract at Fir Park but it Van Veen is thought to be keen to return to the Netherlands.

He has previously played for Helmond Sport, TOP Oss and SC Cambuur. Since leaving Leeuwarden in 2016, he has played for Scunthorpe United and Northampton Town before moving to Scotland in 2021 for Motherwell.

Groningen absolutely wants to limit its stay in the second-tier to just one season and they are not just exploring Van Veen to recruit but hoping to bring back former player Leandro Bacuna.

The Watford midfielder, 31, is on Dennis van der Ree’s radar too as his contract expires this summer and is set to be released at Vicarage Road.

However, the club may not explore their interest in Bacuna just yet mainly because they have plenty of options in midfield at the moment and will need to sell some before they can recruit in that position.

Loanees Mats Bech Sorensen, Matej Chalus and Oliver Antman look set to return to their parent clubs.
