At the final whistle, Lyon’s meeting with Fenerbahçe descended into chaos, with Mattéo Guendouzi taunting the eliminated hosts and a mass melee erupting. According to Canal+, a member of Lyon’s staff is said to have been injured.
The flare-up began with middle fingers, insults and the Jul hand sign aimed at home supporters. The former Marseille midfielder, now with Fenerbahçe, goaded the stands during Lyon’s Champions League play-off exit on Wednesday night.
Guendouzi kept up the provocation at full-time, prompting a skirmish between players on the pitch. As team-mates moved him away, he twice shouted "Allez l'OM" into a pitchside camera, smiling.
As most players headed for the tunnel, a large brawl erupted at the entrance involving team staff and security personnel.
Afterwards, Fenerbahçe full-back Archie Brown said it was an emotional situation, noted Guendouzi had been booed before and during the match, and suggested others might have reacted worse. He added that sometimes events unfold like that.
