Matteo Guendouzi defended his celebration after Fenerbahce’s Champions League play-off win at Lyon, an incident that escalated into a mass confrontation.

"When 60,000 people insult your family, your mother, your children even before the match and no one in the stadium tells them to be quiet. If you want to provoke, it works both ways. If you cannot celebrate as you want to. If you cannot make the JUL sign, where are we going!"

He was speaking to RMC Sport.

The flashpoint came late in the second leg as the Turkish side sealed progression to the League Phase. It ended in bitterness for Lyon, whose ire centred on the yellow and blue midfielder and former Lazio player.

As Fenerbahce celebrated qualification, Guendouzi wound up opponents by making, among other things, the sign associated with Marseille rapper Jul. Lyon fans and players reacted and a fight broke out on the pitch, then continued in the tunnel before staff separated the teams.

Cameras later caught him shouting "Allez l’OM", meaning "Come on Marseille".
