Fenerbahce returned to the Champions League for the first time in 15 years, but their win at Lyon ended in chaos, with Matteo Guendouzi at the centre of an ugly post-match brawl.

"He should stay humble in victory and celebrate with his team in the dressing room. It's unnecessary," said Lyon captain Corentin Tolisso. "It was because the fans had insulted him. But we are insulted every weekend when we play away. We cannot react like that," he told Canal+.

The Frenchman, formerly of Marseille, was jeered throughout the warm-up and later said abuse aimed at his family explained his provocative behaviour during a heated night.

During the warm-up he raised a middle finger to home fans. After Archie Brown made it 2-0 in the 28th minute, he celebrated in front of the Lyon end with further gestures as stewards and barriers kept supporters off the pitch.

Lyon pulled it back to 2-1 and twice thought they had levelled to force extra time, only for VAR to disallow both efforts.

At full time Guendouzi skipped across the pitch, prompting a melee with furious Lyon players. He later approached home fans by a corner flag, stuck out his tongue and grabbed his crotch as cups flew.

Ushered towards the tunnel, he continued to celebrate before it erupted again. Guendouzi was apparently confronted by a Lyon staff member who launched a flying kick, triggering a mass brawl. One video showed Lois Openda, formerly of RB Leipzig, clutching his face before going after a security guard.
