Matteo Guendouzi was at the centre of a violent post-match brawl after Fenerbahce’s 2-1 play-off win at Lyon sealed a Champions League return. The flashpoint erupted by the tunnel shortly after full-time.

Fenerbahce reached the league phase for the first time since 2008-09 with a 3-2 aggregate success. Heavily booed due to his Marseille past, the 27-year-old repeatedly goaded the home support.

As he headed down the tunnel, footage showed a man emerging and launching a flying kick at Guendouzi. L’Equipe identified him as goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira.

The attack sparked a mass melee as players and staff piled in. Punches were allegedly thrown towards Ferreira while he was pinned against a wall, before security intervened.

Guendouzi also shouted “Allez l’OM” into a television camera after the whistle, and team-mates forcefully ushered him away. He later said he had reacted to severe abuse from the stands and insults aimed at his family. “If we can’t celebrate the way we want afterward, I find that disappointing,” he said, via BBC.

Head coach Ismail Kartal offered full backing to his midfielder, saying the squad stood together to support him. Lyon’s Corentin Tolisso condemned the celebrations, saying victory should be met with humility and kept to the dressing room.

Fenerbahce await Thursday’s league phase draw in Monaco from Pot 3. Lyon drop into the Europa League, with both clubs facing the prospect of UEFA disciplinary action after the clashes.
