Guido Rodríguez faces Guedes-style stalemate over Valencia stay

Guido Rodríguez’s contract talks with Valencia are starting to resemble Gonçalo Guedes’s saga, with both involved as Real Sociedad face Valencia today. According to AS, Guido is open to staying, but his salary expectations currently exceed what the club plan to commit.

The Argentine is willing to extend his spell, though not at any price. He already gave up a healthy sum to leave West Ham and, at 32, views this as his last major deal. Interest from Mexico and elsewhere in Spain supports that stance, with Villarreal seemingly stepping back over the cost.

Valencia have been in talks with his agent for weeks, then chose to pause discussions until safety is confirmed. Positions are clear, the club want him but will not go beyond their limit.

Guido feels settled at the club and in the city. His inclusion among Argentina’s provisional 55 underlines the visibility he has at Valencia, even in lean times, with Lionel Scaloni based in Mallorca.

Guedes had similar positives last summer and also spent a loan spell at Villarreal two seasons ago. He visited in March for Thierry Rendall’s birthday, took in the Alavés game at Mestalla and greeted former team-mates.

Now close to finishing his recovery after missing the last five matches, Guedes never hid his wish to come back. Finances blocked it, so Real Sociedad, as Villarreal did before, matched the salary he earned at Benfica and he accepted. It has paid off, 31 games, 8 goals, 4 assists and the Copa del Rey.
