Valencia have suffered a fresh setback, with Guido Rodríguez sidelined by injury and ruled out of Sunday’s trip to Deportivo de A Coruña at Riazor. The blow comes after they took only one point from their opening two league games.

La Grada reports that the Argentine underwent tests yesterday and awaits clarity on a problem that could keep him out beyond one match.

Rodríguez was treated after the Celta Vigo game as he was at his physical limit, yet still completed 90 minutes against Betis. He was not the only Valencia player to finish with discomfort and then play significant minutes again.

He did not train with the group today, adding to Carlos Corberán’s concerns. In response to absences, Corberán trialled a back four in training with Pepelu as pivot, while Rioja, Diakhaby and Pablo Maffeo also missed the group session.

Valencia’s schedule has been unforgiving. They are the only side to have played two matches with just two days of rest between them, something Corberán complained about before facing Betis at Mestalla.

He called the situation incomprehensible and said his team would meet Betis at a disadvantage.

Valencia play again on Sunday at 19:30 with less rest than their opponents, and the absentee list could yet grow. Even so, they have been off since Tuesday, enough time to prepare for a game they need to win after back-to-back slips.
