Sheffield United's results aren't improving, and Gustavo Hamer may be regretting his decision to stay this summer
It's been a disastrous opening couple of months to the 2025/26 Championship seaosn for Sheffield United.
Just one win in ten in all competitions, nine defeats and four goals scored in those ten games leaves the Blades rooted to the foot of the Championship table after nine games, whilst also being dumped out of the EFL Cup at the first hurdle.
Even a Chris Wilder return for his third stint in the Bramall Lane dugout hasn't seen results drastically change, albeit with better performances since the fan favourite manager resumed his post after a terrible opening five games with Ruben Selles in charge.
Nevertheless, the Blades have won just one and lost three since Chris Wilder came back, and day by day, the threat of a potential relegation battle come the end of the season gets bigger and bigger.
Whilst still three months away, Sheffield United need to get the upcoming January transfer window right. Chris Wilder knows this and has already sent a document to the owners stating who he wants to bring in when the window opens, but the Blades need to be wary of who may look to go out the other way.
Sheffield United lost a few key members of last season's 90-point team in the summer, and they need to ensure that last season's Championship Player of the Season, Gustavo Hamer, doesn't belatedly join them.
The summer transfer saga surrounding Hamer's future seemed to go on for an age, after it was actually revealed in April that Leeds United put in a late bid for the Dutchman the previous summer. With Daniel Farke's Whites going up, and the Blades failing to do so, all signs pointed to another bid being lodged.
Additionally, PSV registered their interest in the attacking midfielder this past summer, but Hamer seemingly wanted a Premier League move, and when it didn't end up coming, he remained at Bramall Lane.
Despite January windows being seen as more difficult for moves to be made due to a shorter time frame, you'd get the idea that interest will still be there for the 28-year-old, as even though the Blades are going through a tough period, Hamer's class is still there to be seen, shown specifically through his halfway line stunner against Birmingham City in the EFL Cup.
Hamer wanted a Premier League move this past summer and was happy to chance his luck with Sheffield United once more to get there this season, but given the awful start the Blades have made, a move to any top-flight side may be more attractive for him.
If any team in the top flight in England or elsewhere feels they need an extra creative spark for the second half of the season, Hamer could be their man, and as the Dutchman enters his prime, he won't want to be wasting his talents in a prospective Championship relegation battle.
As alluded to, it can be difficult for high-profile moves to be made in January, as the selling team then needs to scramble to pick up a replacement with little time to operate in the window.
Now, this could mean that, if Hamer were to go, the Blades could bank a decent sum of money for him, despite their position. They held out for £20 million in the summer of 2024, and could do so again in January 2026.
But, it could also mean that the Dutchman remains at Bramall Lane, which could give Chris Wilder's side the boost needed to avoid any relegation drama towards the latter stages of the campaign, or even help them mount an unlikely late play-off charge, if results dramatically improve over the next few months.
Hamer was patient in the summer and was happy to let the Blades hold the cards regarding a departure, and whilst the likes of Vini Souza and Anel Ahmedhodzic did leave, their creative outlet stayed because of that.
So, unless he expresses a huge desire to leave, which may only really be the case if the Blades are still rock bottom in January, Sheffield United may hold on to him for another few months at least.
