Gus Hamer liked a message from Callum O'Hare after he reflected on his time at Sheffield United following a £7m transfer to Wrexham.

Callum O’Hare sent an emotional message to Sheffield United fans after he completed a deadline day transfer to Championship rivals Wrexham.

It was a hectic summer for the Blades, with Chris Wilder having to deal with plenty of off-field issues that restricted the business he could do.

The club were limited in terms of what they could spend to bring players in, whilst Andre Brooks and Gus Hamer were among the high-profile first-team players who departed Bramall Lane.

With Brooks and Hamer having secured moves away earlier in the window, there’s no denying it was a blow to lose O’Hare.

The attacking midfielder had started, and scored, in the draw at Cardiff City on Saturday, so he was clearly someone who Wilder wanted to play a big role moving forward.

But, a £7m agreement was struck, and the ex-Aston Villa man left for Wrexham. And, after the deal was confirmed, he took to Instagram to send a message to the Sheffield United fans.

“Blades, It’s really been an absolute pleasure to play for you. To all the fans, the staff and the boys thank you for making my time here so good. I’ve loved every minute and football changes so quickly, but I’ll always be proud to have played for Sheffield United. Thank you for everything.”

Hamer, who has left for Coventry City, was among those to react to O’Hare’s message on Instagram, as he liked the post.

There’s no getting away from the fact that this was a blow for Sheffield United, as O’Hare is a very good player at this level.

There will be some who feel he can still do more in terms of his output compared to his talent, but the 28-year-old has shown for the Blades, and Coventry in the past, that he can make a difference in the Championship.

Clearly, it’s a setback for Sheffield United to lose a player like that to a side that they will consider rivals in terms of challenging for the play-offs, and fans will be unhappy at the way the window played out.

It comes down to the financial situation at Bramall Lane, and it will be interesting to see if any clarity is provided on what the long-term plans are under the current regime.

Chris Wilder will have to create a new-look Sheffield United

The likes of Hamer, O’Hare and Brooks are all excellent individuals, and Wilder will no doubt wish he had players like that at his disposal.

But, to the credit of the recruitment team and the manager, they have still managed to do some decent deals with the limited resources available, and an unbeaten start to the season shows he still has a very good group.

The win against Bolton last night was very welcome, and the team did manage to score three goals, so they are still finding ways to get on the scoresheet even without their three creative sparks from last season.

So, it will be interesting to see how Wilder moulds the team over the next few months, but he has shown in the past that even on a budget, he can build successful Championship teams.
