Sunderland Echo understands that Sunderland have opted against triggering a one-year option in Harrison Jones’ contract, leaving the versatile midfielder free to depart when his deal expires this summer.
The Wearside-born Academy of Light graduate made his senior debut in August 2024, coming on for the final 20 minutes of a Carabao Cup first-round defeat at then-Championship rivals Preston North End.
He has since made six further first-team appearances, with two starts under Regis Le Bris during the final month of last season’s promotion push to the Premier League. His first senior start arrived in an FA Cup third-round loss to Stoke City, which he described at the time as a dream realised at the Stadium of Light.
This season his only start came in a Carabao Cup defeat against Huddersfield Town in August. He was an unused substitute in 12 Premier League fixtures and was on the bench for last month’s Tyne-Wear derby win at Newcastle.
A number of EFL sides explored a January loan, but an injury in a Premier League International Cup tie against Borussia Dortmund curtailed any move.
Since returning, Jones has captained the Under-21s over the last month and scored a fine free-kick in a 2-1 defeat to Derby County earlier this week.
Scouts watched that match and the midfielder is believed to have interest from League One and League Two, along with clubs in the Scottish Premiership. At least five teams in the EFL and two north of the border have indicated a willingness to discuss a deal once he is out of contract.
