The months-long contract poker between FC Bayern and Dayot Upamecano may be close to a sporting conclusion, but the discussions surrounding the record champions‘ approach continue. The matter continues to cause astonishment in footballing Germany – also because the negotiations dragged on for months and at times took on characteristics that many observers cannot reconcile with FC Bayern’s self-image

Ex-Bundesliga manager Heribert Bruchhagen has now also spoken out – and has not minced his words. In an interview with Sky, the former Frankfurt and HSV boss expressed his irritation at the behavior of all parties involved, in particular the long delay surrounding the French international

Bruchhagen criticizes lack of consistency

For Bruchhagen, it is clear that FC Bayern, as a top club, should have taken a much clearer line. „FC Bayern is a top club, you don’t walk away from them,“ the 77-year-old made unmistakably clear. In his view, there was no room for endless renegotiations in such cases

Bruchhagen described his own approach from his time as manager: „I didn’t renegotiate when we made an offer. If you renegotiated, you would only have received a worse offer, not a better one.“ It was precisely this consistency that showed the players clear limits early on

„I would have lost patience then“

Bruchhagen is particularly critical of the length of time and the public drama surrounding Upamecano. „I would have lost patience with that drama. I would have told him to get lost,“ was the clear verdict of the former Bundesliga manager. He believes it is crucial that clubs stick to their principles in order to avoid weakening their negotiating position

At the same time, Bruchhagen conceded that Bayern may ultimately have their reasons for the path they have taken. „But things have turned out differently and Bayern will know what the right thing to do is,“ he concluded, qualifying his harsh criticism.
