Hector Paletta, the VAR for Cruzeiro v Flamengo, reviewed Matheus Henrique’s foul on Bruno Henrique in the 1-1 draw and chose not to call referee Yael Falcón to the monitor.

According to Globo.com, Paletta also handled the VAR in the 2025 Libertadores final between Flamengo and Palmeiras in Lima, a match that featured two debated incidents involving Pulgar and Raphael Veiga.

At Mineirão, 10 minutes into the first half, Matheus Henrique arrived late and caught Bruno Henrique on the shin. He was shown a yellow card, and former referee Paulo Cesar Oliveira felt the Cruzeiro midfielder should have been sent off.

In that 2025 final, at 11 minutes, Raphael Veiga raised his foot in a challenge and caught Carrascal’s shin with his studs. Oliveira’s view at the time was that it was not a red card.

Later, at 29 minutes, Bruno Fuchs fouled Arrascaeta, who ended up on the turf trapping the ball between his legs. As the defender tried to win it back, he kicked the ball and Arrascaeta’s thigh, prompting Pulgar to kick Fuchs on the shin with play stopped. The video assistant did not advise an on-field review, and Oliveira believed Pulgar should have been dismissed.

Cruzeiro and Flamengo drew 1-1 in the first leg of the Libertadores round of 16. The return is on Wednesday at Maracanã at 21:30, Brasília time. After a third booking, Matheus Henrique is suspended.
