Lazio defender Alessio Romagnoli could soon leave the club, as he’s been frustrated with the management’s treatment over the past few years.
The 31-year-old left AC Milan in June 2022, and while he had several lucrative offers on the table, he decided to take a significant pay cut to join his beloved club. At the time, Lazio president Claudio Lotito promised him a pay raise should he help the team secure Champions League football. The player did his part, but the president didn’t keep his word.
Almost three years removed from that episode, Romagnoli has grown tired of waiting for the hierarchy to fulfil its promise. He even voiced his frustration publicly last season. In an interview with Rai Sport (via Il Messaggero), the defender’s agent, Enzo Raiola, confirmed that the player is unlikely to stay at Lazio for the rest of his career, revealing that they’re considering their options.
Alessio wanted to end his career here, but Lazio haven’t been in touch for years, and now we’re looking around. When he leaves, he’ll go abroad.
This statement follows reports of ongoing talks between Romagnoli’s entourage and Al-Sadd, the Qatari giants coached by Roberto Mancini. The centre-back’s contract with Lazio is only valid until June 2027, so it remains to be seen if the management would consider letting the Roman leave in the middle of the campaign.
This departure would only widen the rift between the Lazio hierarchy and Maurizio Sarri, as previous reports claimed that the head coach would consider resigning should the club sell Romagnoli, whom he considers absolutely vital for his plans.
