The potential sale of Alessio Romagnoli risks becoming the final straw in Maurizio Sarri’s increasingly strained relationship with Lazio.
Il Messaggero reports that the head coach, who had pledged to stay until the end of the season out of loyalty to the fanbase, would rethink his stance and could resign immediately if the club sell a defender he deems untouchable.
Sarri, 67, returned to Formello last summer after 15 months out. His comeback was quickly hampered by a transfer ban that left him with a squad ill-suited to his style.
Even with the ban lifted, he has not been convinced by the club’s market work. He lamented Matteo Guendouzi’s departure and said he knew little about arrivals Petar Ratkov and Kenneth Taylor, while barbs at the hierarchy reportedly irked president Claudio Lotito.
Romagnoli is unhappy with the club’s failure to honour a 2022 promise of a pay rise if Champions League qualification was achieved. He played his part as Lazio finished second in 2022/23, yet the directors did not deliver.
With no call forthcoming, his camp have offered him to Qatari club Al-Sadd, coached by Roberto Mancini. The centre-back is 31.
