The truth about the MLS months ago was that clubs searched for European veterans who had a killing season in one of the Top five leagues, or had a decent performance in a lower league, but still important.
Before joining Major League Soccer, like every other player, Heung-Min Son had some doubts about arriving in LAFC.
However, the South Korean forward explained that before finalizing his contract with Tottenham Hotspur, where he was captain, he had a Zoom meeting with the LAFC staff and changed his mind.
After an interview with GOAL, Heung-Min Son opened his interview with a truth that every watching fan can agree with:
“I'm always surprised every single week on the league's improvement. Like before I joined, I didn't even know about MLS, but I'm really, really surprised about every single game.”
And the former Spurs is not lying. Since his arrival, with Lionel Messi and Thomas Muller, MLS has improved in its fandom, its fields, its stadiums, and in the overall view of the league itself.
We’ve discussed the improvement in the past, as MLS is considered the third-best league outside of the European Top five leagues.
But returning to the moment before joining the league, Son explains in detail what that situation was during his final deal in Europe:
“Before I joined MLS, obviously, I was back in London. So I got a call from my agent saying, ‘Yeah, LAFC are interested, and do you want to go to LA? Do you want to go play in MLS? I was like, ‘Wow, I'm that old?’ You know, like I was thinking I would not go to MLS.”
However, father time happens to everyone, and the former Bayern Leverkusen player understood that it was time to look for a new challenge in a different place. And that’s where the magic happened for LAFC:
“And then I think a year or two years later, my contract had one year left, and then I felt like I needed a new chapter and needed a new challenge. So we were talking, and then my friend and my agent were just telling me, ‘Yeah, LAFC still wants you. I think they are the most deserving team; they deserve a call, you know? They deserve a meeting. They deserve a call.”
So yes, after the long wait and plenty of pursuit by Los Angeles Football Club, the meeting occurred:
“So I was finally ending up on a Zoom call with LAFC, with John, so on, and then we talked, and then I straight felt that, ‘Wow, this is very interesting, you know, interesting. And they've been following me for many years. And then I think because of that, I tried to join MLS, and look, I mean, I'm here now.”
And the rest is history; that’s how the connection between Heung-Min Son and LAFC was made.
