Under Jürgen Klopp, the German national team should, if possible, move in the right direction very quickly. If former Bayern star Thomas Müller has his way, those in charge still have a lot of work ahead of them. However, Müller also exudes a sense of optimism.

On the podcast “The Late Run” hosted by former NFL star Chad Johnson, Müller spoke, among other things, about the challenges the DFB now faces. And there are quite a few.

“One thing is certain: German soccer is currently at a point where we’re struggling to find a new generation that people really enjoy watching. And it’s not just about how we play; it’s also about identity and, to some extent, mentality. The entire soccer world looked to us and said, ‘Oh, we want that German mentality—to fight through it and be a thorn in the side at every moment,’” explained the former national team player, who was also closely involved with the team during the World Cup in his role as an expert.

According to Müller, German soccer needs a clear identity again. Structures need to be put in place now that are sustainable. “It seems as though we’ve somehow lost that, because our style of play is sometimes a bit too pretty, but not decisive enough. We’re not clinical enough in front of the goal. So we’re kind of stuck in the middle right now,” Müller said, hitting the nail on the head.

The former Bayern attacking star, who himself recently made a decisive impact in the MLS, then joked: “Jürgen, I hope I’m on your list!” This is a clear allusion to the fact that Müller himself possessed precisely these attributes during his playing career—attributes he now feels are missing from the German national team.

As for the new national team coach, Müller is optimistic. Klopp could “bring clarity,” and that’s definitely needed right now. But above all, this process takes time.
