Woolfenden will always remember his night with the music star and lifelong Tractor Boys fan.

Coventry City centre-back Luke Woolfenden has a permanent reminder of the night he spent being entertained by Ed Sheeran during his time at Ipswich Town.

Coventry City’s defender - who arrived at the club from Ipswich Town during the summer - was enjoying a few end-of-season drinks with the Tractor Boys’ most famous fan.

Whether that libation influenced his decision to take advantage of the tattoo artist positioned in the corner of the ginger crooner’s studio is unknown: perhaps it's just a bad habit?

But what did happen is that Woolfenden, 26, ended up with a bit more than he bargained for.

While his right arm is filled with the face of a big cat and a verse of writing, there are only two examples of ink on his left.

One, on his wrist is the letter ‘H’, is in homage to his other half, while the other is the emoji for the ‘Sign of the Horns’, and was done during his night with the superstar.

It translates as ‘a sign associated with rock or heavy metal music, and it is seen as one of appreciation of that.’

As the man himself explained: “I got this tattoo when we went to Ed Sheeran’s studio at the end of last season and he had a tattoo artist there.

“He had a tattoo artist just sat in the corner of his studio. It was a good set-up, actually, it was a great set-up.

“The guy was set-up in the corner and it was a spur-of-the-moment thing.

“There were a few of us who got one, after a few beers. I can’t remember how many of us it was - yes, it was that good a night.

“It was just a good night out, or a night in, as it were.”

Woolfenden will be hoping to make lasting promotion memories with Coventry City this season

Woolfenden arrived at Championship high-flyers Coventry City during the summer, and it was something of a surprise when he joined from Ipswich having only just agreed a new deal in January until 2027.

And he has had to wait for his chance at The CBS Arena so far.

Not only is Coventry City’s side scoring goals by the bucketful - they currently top the second tier charts with 27 to their name - they aren’t conceding many, either.

Their last three games have all been won by keeping a shut-out, and it’s a team selction situation for Sky Blues boss Frank Lampard that Woolfenden accepts.

He finally made his debut coming on from the bench during the 4-0 win over Millwall on 1 October, and followed that up with a bigger taste of the action during the Sky Blues’ 5-0 hammering of Sheffield Wednesday last time out.

Woolfenden said: “I knew it was a good team, which was another reason why I wanted to come here.

“I think it's a team that's been up there in about the last few years, so the aim is to get out of the league and that was a a big reason.

“And there was the pull of the manager - a young manager, looking at what he's done from now outside, not just here, at other clubs as well, you know, he's done well at different places. So I think it was a pull to play under him.

“And I knew it was not a case of coming in and getting thrown in straight away. I completely understand that the boys are on fire at a minute.

“The boys are playing well, so I know I’ve to got to come here and earn my place in the team, so when that opportunity comes, I'm ready.”

Given his experience of winning promotion from the Championship, and making 15 Premier League appearances for Ipswich last season, Lampard will surely need to call upon his experience many times for Coventry this term.

Bobby Thomas and Liam Kitching look to have established themselves as the starting centre-back duo, but with Joel Latibeaudiere his only other natural and senior competitor at the position, Woolfenden will surely fancy his chances of cementing himself as the third-choice at the very least, ready to step in at a moments notice to provide a quality piece of depth and rotation to the Sky Blues backline.
