It's been a chaotic week or so for Wolves.

Kieran Trippier signed a pre-contract agreement with the Old Gold following his exit from Newcastle United to add a huge degree of experience and quality to the side's ranks, whilst Raul Jimenez has sealed his return to Molineux following his release from Fulham.

Both signings were statements of intent by the relegated outfit, who are looking to ensure their time outside the top-flight is as short-lived as possible, and have since made one more crucial move that has shocked the masses.

The decision to dismiss Rob Edwards from his role at the helm at Molineux came as a shock to many, not because of his record as head coach, but because of the timing of which it happened, with new arrival Trippier even threatening to rip up his deal with the club as a result.

Now, Wolves are closing in on the appointment of 46-year-old Portuguese boss Cesar Peixoto from Gil Vicente, and the amount the English club must pay in compensation to complete the deal has now been revealed.

Wolverhampton Wanderers must pay in excess of a seven-figure sum in compensation to appoint Cesar Peixoto from Gil Vicente

Peixoto, to date, has spent his entire coaching career in his native Portugal, taking charge of the likes of Varzim, Academica Coimbra, Chaves, Moreirense, Pacos Ferreira, and, most recently, Gil Vicente, whom he guided to a 6th-placed finish in the top-flight this campaign.

Now, he looks set to become the new permanent head coach at Wolves following the dismissal of Edwards, as the Black Country outfit continue their long-lasting relationship with Portuguese super agent Jorge Mendes.

Mendes played a huge role in appointing Nuno Espirito Santo at Wolves in 2017, as well as the deals that saw the likes of Diogo Jota and Ruben Neves head to the second-tier outfit.

Wolves supporters will be hoping for a similar outcome to that which they endured under Nuno, when they romped to the Championship title on 99 points in 2018, before going on to secure consecutive 7th-placed finishes in the Premier League.

This sum is what will go directly to the Portuguese outfit and does not include the compensation they would have paid to sack Edwards, with that fee likely substantially higher given the Welshman still had three years left to run on his terms at Molineux.

Wolves will be hoping that the cost of sacking Edwards and appointing Peixoto is worth it, as if they can secure an immediate return to the top-flight, the compensation they will be paying to Gil Vicente will be worth every penny.

Wolves' decision to dismiss Edwards, on the whole, ought not to be overly controversial, given his abysmal record since taking charge of Middlesbrough back in November 2025.

The Welshman won just five of his 30 games at the helm, and whether he was the correct person to lead them into the Championship was heavily debated in the Wolves fanbase, but given his three-year deal, it was assumed by all accounts the decision had already been made.

Now, Peixoto is set to replace him at the helm, as the club's board face huge pressure for this decision to be vindicated. Otherwise, they will lose a huge degree of trust throughout the fanbase.

Time will tell whether the fee paid and decision made is the correct one for Wolves, as Peixito is set to guide them into the second tier.
