Sunderland’s record £161.7 million summer spend ushered in a raft of new faces, and several promotion stalwarts departed on loan. With the January deadline nearing, their progress is under review.
According to Sunderland Echo, Jenson Seelt, Patrick Roberts and Alan Browne have been regulars for Wolfsburg, Birmingham City and Middlesbrough respectively.
Seelt, 22, has nine Bundesliga outings from 15, totalling 680 minutes and winning 75 tackles and 27 aerial duels. He had 21 Sunderland appearances and missed 33 games in 2024 after knee surgery. Wolfsburg are reportedly keen on a permanent deal that could shorten his Sunderland contract, which runs to summer 2028, if agreed in 2026.
Roberts, 28, has featured in 21 of 22 league matches for Birmingham, playing 1,440 minutes with two goals and four assists. A key figure in Sunderland’s 2022 and 2025 play-off runs, he has been praised by Chris Davies, who has hinted at a permanent move amid strong rumours of talks this month.
Browne, 30, has played 20 of 22 league games for Middlesbrough, scoring once in 1,102 minutes. Part of Sunderland’s promotion-winning squad last season with 23 appearances, he has impressed with his versatility at right-back. He has expressed disappointment at missing Premier League plans and hopes for another chance next season, with his Sunderland deal running to June 2027 and decisions likely to wait until next year.
