Villa have been in a downwards spiral in recent weeks, and their victory in the first leg is their only win in the last six. Their form has seen them start to move down the Premier League table and they may soon choose to target Europa League success as a route into the Champions League. Emery has lifted the trophy four times, so if anyone knows how to do it, it is him.
Conversely, Lille’s first leg defeat is their only loss in their last six. The French side are a strong outfit but face a tough task overturning the deficit at Villa Park.
“Of course, we won the first match,” said Emery. “It’s very important, this result, but it’s not enough, I know it. And we must play now at home with our supporters, and we must play trying to carry on the same game plan we had there.”
“We’ll see tomorrow what kind of match our opponent throws at us,” said Lille boss Bruno Genesio. “But I think we’ll need to play with our legs, but also with our heads. We’re only at halftime of this match. We’re not in an ideal position since we lost the first leg, but we have 90 minutes, maybe even more, to make up the deficit and secure qualification.”
