Champions League nights are usually when Liverpool have found their rhythm, but this one arrives at a moment of real crisis. Saturday’s humbling 3–0 defeat to Nottingham Forest was their eighth loss in 11 matches and dragged them down to 12th in the Premier League. It marked another low in Slot’s troubled second season, following a similarly heavy loss to Manchester City before the international break.

PSV arrive in far more convincing form, though they have collected just five points from their Champions League league-phase fixtures, the Dutch giants have still only lost twice in all competitions this season. A strong Eredivisie campaign has them top of the table, boasting 41 goals in 13 league matches, and they come into tonight unbeaten in five, with four straight domestic wins.

Their European journey has been mixed including a chaotic 6–2 victory over Napoli but Bosz’s side are dangerous going forward and have matched Liverpool’s tally of nine Champions League goals so far. PSV also won the last meeting between the sides, though the Reds had already qualified at the time.

Liverpool boss Slot hopes that Anfield can help turn their poor form around.

“You never know in this stadium,” he said. “If you score a goal, then things can work out. In a few days, we have to play in the Champions League again and then play three Premier League games in a short space. Keep your head up and work incredibly hard.

“We are trying every single day. It’s always helpful to have experienced and quality players. It’s not working out at this moment.”

PSV manager Peter Bosz on whether Liverpool’s poor form will help his side: “I haven’t got a crystal ball,” he said. “I’d rather play against a team that is not in form than one which is. I really can’t be bothered answering that.

“I would have to have really studied what’s going on and I haven’t. We have to be PSV and play our own way. Liverpool have their own way of playing. Tomorrow it is about who does it the best.”
