Jack Whatmough signed former Preston North End defender Jack Whatmough this summer on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee and has since made a bright start to life for the Terriers.

The 28-year-old arrived at the Accu Stadium to be a key part of Lee Grant's side with his wealth of experience across the EFL.

After kicking off his career and spending eight years at Portsmouth, the defender made subsequent moves to Wigan and Preston before deciding to settle in West Yorkshire this summer.

After featuring twice in pre-season for his new club, Whatmough has already seemed to cement his place in the starting XI by playing 90 minutes in Huddersfield's opening two league fixtures.

Whatmough has quickly sought to impress his new boss, Grant, and could be a weapon this season due to his defensive prowess as well as the threat he poses in the air from set-pieces.

After a pivotally important 0-2 away victory against Reading at the weekend, the promotion candidates have enjoyed a fast start to life in League One with back-to-back wins.

Despite leaving it relatively late to open the scoring, an assured performance from Grant's side means his team sit on six points with a ceratin area to thank for this, and that is Huddersfield's proficiency from set-pieces.

With the Terriers being heavily reliant on set-pieces for a route to goals last season, a common theme may emerge with both goals against Reading coming from the avenue of attack.

Whatmough capped off his second league appearance with a man of the match performance against Reading and chipped in with the opening goal of the game from a corner in the 74th minute of the match.

As the ball was whipped in from the right corner, the Terriers new signing showed his strength to rise highest and meet the ball with his head before casually poking home the rebound.

A side of Whatmough's game that may now be unlocked

His aerial strength combined with his willingness to get forward could prove to be a secret weapon for Grant as the season progresses. It's a side to Whatmough's game that may yet to be discovered.

The signing of the Englishman could spell trouble for the opposition this season, with the experienced defender proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the final third as well as the defensive.

Even though Whatmough has never scored more than two league goals in a season throughout his career, Grant's style of play as well as clear training ground work on set-pieces could suit Whatmough, and breed a new lease of life into the defender as he begins his journey in West Yorkshire.
