Huddersfield Town are set to sign yet another player from Excelsior, with a winger close to arriving for a multi-million euro fee...

Huddersfield Town have already made four summer signings in 2026 - and they look set to add a fifth to their ranks in the coming days.

The club head into the 2026/27 season knowing this is a hugely important summer for all involved with Huddersfield Town. Just over four years ago, the Terriers were Championship play-off finalists and within touching distance of a return to the Premier League.

However, a sharp decline followed. Relegation to League One in 2024 was a bitter blow, and after two seasons in the third tier without securing promotion, patience is beginning to wear thin for a fanbase that expects at least the play-offs and not ninth and 10th in the third tier.

Owner Kevin Nagle has shown ambition since arriving, but recruitment must now translate into results on the pitch. Huddersfield need to assemble a squad capable of coping with the expectation that comes with being one of League One's biggest clubs, while also adding the quality and depth required to sustain a promotion challenge over 46 games.

Another season outside the Championship would represent a significant disappointment, given the club's stature and recent history. They have already added Matty Young, Ethan Brierley, and Ashley Fletcher to their ranks, as well as Exelcior's Ilias Bronkhorst.

Now, it appears the Dutch market is yet again being explored by the club. In fact, the same club is being looked at, with Voetbal International revealing Derensili Sanches Fernandes is set to leave the side to move to West Yorkshire this summer.

Once the paperwork is finalised, the 25-year-old forward will make the switch to the League One outfit for what is described as a multi-million pound fee by the publication.

It's said that it would be another handsome sum for Excelsior, who brought Sanches Fernandes back from Jong FC Utrecht three years ago. He scored six times in the Dutch top flight last season, four of which came during the final five matchdays.

Partly due to this, the newly promoted Rotterdammers retained their place in the top flight. In the Dutch second tier the season prior, the winger scored 11 and assisted nine in 37 matches in all competitions.

It's stated in the report that, once the winger receives his visa, his adventure at Huddersfield can officially begin.

Huddersfield Town are addressing all the right areas currently

Huddersfield certainly needed to inject greater pace into their squad if they are to become a more well-rounded attacking side next season. The permanent addition of Bali Mumba in January addressed that to an extent, but there is still room for more speed in the final third.

Experienced players such as Marcus Harness and Lynden Gooch continue to offer quality and intelligence, yet they are perhaps not quite as explosive as they once were. A successful League One side requires a blend of profiles: physicality to compete, technical quality to control matches, and genuine pace to stretch defences.

That is where the imminent arrival of Sanches Fernandes should prove to be so important. His speed gives Huddersfield another outlet to break quickly and diversify their attacks, offering a different dimension against teams who defend deep or leave space to exploit in transition.

So far, their summer looks like it is addressing all the right things for Huddersfield, but they are up against a number of other big and ambitious clubs again. It will be an exciting League One season yet again in 2026/27, with that much absolutely certain right now.
