Now Paul Merson is a confirmed Chelsea fan, we love to get his opinions on the Blues. He’s been proved right so many times, often taking the opposite view to the mainstream and coming out on top.

He was on Sky Sports News today talking about Nicolas Jackson’s move to Bayern Munich, which has obviously come into focus (not that it was ever really ever out of focus) with Chelsea facing the Bavarians tonight.

Merson was very much in the camp that letting the Senegal star go was a mistake.

“I still can’t believe they let Jackson go. I think he’s a handful, Jackson. I know he’s a bit hot and cold, but when he’s hot he’s hot. And he causes problems and I think he makes Palmer a better player,” Merson said.

“For me, I think [selling Jackson] will hurt Chelsea in the long run… It’s a good move for him, but I couldn’t believe Chelsea let him go.”

He also wasn’t sure it’s the right move for Jackson either, considering the depth that Bayern have in attacking positions:

“I think I’ve got more chance of playing for Bayern Munich than him at the moment, because if Harry Kane is playing he’s not playing.”

Sadly for the fans wanting Jackson to play a lot to trigger a permanent option in his loan, Merson’s probably right.

Merson on slow Chelsea’s issues

Merson also noted two potentially key players this season, as well as something Chelsea need to do better to become contenders:

“[Estevao] he’s gonna be a talent, there’s no doubt about that. But they’ve got to move the ball quickly. They’ve got to have certain players that are gonna stay fit, and one of them has got to be Moises Caicedo.”
