Hugo Souza and Corinthians have condemned racist abuse directed at the goalkeeper during their Copa Libertadores last-16 match away to Rosario in Argentina in the night from Thursday to Friday.

The Brazilian club said in a statement that the abuse came from Rosario supporters during the tie, and it called for an investigation to identify those responsible.

Souza reported the incident to the referee, who immediately made the anti-racism protocol gesture on the pitch.

Speaking in the mixed zone, he said such episodes occur whenever they play in Argentina, questioned whether opponents consider themselves superior, and added that he can only keep fighting it.

Corinthians have addressed racism publicly before. In April the club removed the seat of a supporter who hurled racist insults during the 0-0 draw with Palmeiras, alongside a social media awareness campaign.
